Winner of the San Francisco’s International Center for the Arts inaugural 21st Century 2009 Illuminations and Reflections International Composition Competition, the 2009 Earplay Donald Aird Memorial International Composers Competition, the 2010 Society of Composers, Incorporated/American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Student Commission Competition region I, and the 2009 23rd Annual California State University statewide research competition, Tan Hainu has received honors and awards from many organizations. Her works have been performed in many excellent international music festivals and conferences such as Accent10 Chamber Music and New Music Festival at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Bowdoin International Music Festival in Maine, California Summer Music Festival in San Francisco, Freie Universität Berlin International Summer Music Composition Conference in Berlin, International Joint Conference on Latin-American Music and on Modern Music in Texas, Illuminations and Reflections: First Annual Symposium on Music in the 21st Century in San Francisco, National Association of Composers/USA National Annual Conference in Oregon, Nevada Encounters of New Music in Las Vegas, New England Conservatory Composers Lab Ensemble Inaugural Workshop in Boston, Society of Composers Incorporated Student National Conference in Indiana, The Cortona Sessions for New Music in Italy, and at other venues throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. Her catalogue includes operas, symphonies, string quartets, concertos, orchestral works, chamber music, choral music, and songs.
Tan Hainu holds a Master of Music degree in Music Composition from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston where she attained high academic rank and has been twice honored on the Dean's list, and she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Composition from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing where she received the highest mark for her graduation composition. In the summer of 2006, 2008, 2009, and 2010, Tan Hainu was privileged to have studied at the Bowdoin International Music Festival and the Freie Universität Berlin under Professor Samuel Adler of The Juilliard School, who gave her the highest marks and complimented her work ethic. She has taught music composition, music theory, ear training, and world music at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and California State University, Los Angeles, and she is also a professional piano teacher of 18-year experience. Tan Hainu is affiliated with the American Composers Forum, the American Music Center, the Society of Composers Incorporated, and the National Association of Composers/USA.
